Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health threat and growing in Canada. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobials is increasing drug-resistance in microbes that spread among and between humans, animals and plants. AMR is making infectious diseases harder or impossible to treat and that affects us all. World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), held November 18 to 24, is a time to build awareness and encourage action. World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) is a global campaign that is celebrated annually to improve awareness and understanding of AMR and encourage best practices among the public, One Health stakeholders and policymakers, who all play a critical role in reducing the further emergence and spread of AMR.
The group’s overall objective: to ensure Canadians have access to these vital antimicrobials when needed, by addressing and reducing barriers to their availability.
Our vision is to reduce the impact of antibiotic resistant infections with an innovative and appropriately regulated biologic therapeutic.
