History of AMMI Canada

AMMI Canada was established in 2004 through the amalgamation of the Canadian Infectious Diseases Society (CIDS) and the Canadian Association of Medical Microbiology (CAMM). The two societies brought together Canada’s infectious diseases and medical microbiology communities into one national organization, reflecting their shared commitment to clinical care, laboratory diagnosis, public health, research, education, advocacy, and antimicrobial stewardship.
CIDS, formed in 1977, represented physicians and trainees in infectious diseases, while CAMM, originally established in 1961 as the Canadian Association of Medical Bacteriologists, represented medical microbiologists and supported the development of medical microbiology as a recognized specialty in Canada.
Today, AMMI Canada provides national leadership for professionals across both fields, supporting members through education, advocacy, research, collaboration, and knowledge translation to improve infection prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and control across Canada.
