Continuous Professional Development Committee

AMMI CANADA CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) COMMITTEE

The purpose of the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Committee is:

To assess the professional development needs of all AMMI Canada members and facilitate the development of meaningful, effective continuous professional development curricula and to serve as a national resource for postgraduate microbiology and infectious diseases programs and physician organizations providing content advice and accreditation of continuing medical education in infectious disease and medical microbiology.

Mission

The mission of the AMMI Canada Continuing Professional Development Committee is to position AMMI Canada as a national leader in the continuing professional development in the fields of clinical microbiology and infectious diseases.

Goals

  • To conduct biennial, comprehensive professional development needs assessments of our membership (Canadian physicians in the fields of medical microbiology and infectious disease), in addition to regular, focused needs assessments, as required.
  • To perform biennial environmental scans (alternating years with needs assessments) to identify unperceived learning needs in the fields of infectious disease and medical microbiology.
  • To provide multimodal education across all sections of the CPD framework (group learning, self-learning, and assessment) that addresses perceived and unperceived gaps in knowledge, skills, and/or attitudes to promote a practice change with the intent of improving patient outcomes.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness and outcomes of AMMI Canada CPD initiatives through learner feedback.
  • To provide accreditation for infectious diseases and medical microbiology educational programs for the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

Tropical Medicine Rounds are an interactive, educational way to participate in real-life case discussions from Tropical Medicine Experts across Canada.

CAN AMS! is a new webinar series focused on antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) interventions.

Medical Microbiology Review Course

The 2027 Medical Microbiology Review Course offers another exceptional opportunity to deepen knowledge and strengthen clinical and laboratory expertise. This course is now a core component of AMMI Canada’s annual education portfolio and is offered each year as a dedicated national learning event.

Canadian Antibiotic Treatment Guidance

AMMI Canada is leading the development of National Antimicrobial Empiric Guidelines as part of the Pan-Canadian Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, ensuring prescribers have the resources and tools for appropriate antimicrobial use. A national expert panel is applying a rigorous GRADE-based methodology to review evidence and adapt WHO recommendations to the Canadian context.

Antimicrobial Awareness

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global public health threat and growing in Canada. Overuse and misuse of antibiotics and other antimicrobials is increasing drug-resistance in microbes that spread among and between humans, animals and plants. AMR is making  infectious diseases harder or impossible to treat and that affects us all. World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW), held November 18 to 24, is a time to build awareness and encourage action. For more information please about antimicrobial awareness in Canda visit: who.int/campaigns/world-antimicrobial-awareness-week or antibioticawareness.ca/
