The Canadian Nosocomial Infection Surveillance Program (CNISP) is a national collaboration between the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC), the National Microbiology Laboratory (NML), the Association of Medical Microbiology and Infectious Disease Canada (AMMI Canada), and sentinel hospitals across Canada. Established in 1995, CNISP conducts prospective surveillance of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), antimicrobial-resistant organisms (AROs), antimicrobial use, infection prevention and control practices, laboratory practices, viral respiratory illnesses, and emerging threats such as Candida auris. The program collects epidemiologic and microbiology data to inform evidence-based policies, antimicrobial stewardship, infection prevention and control measures, and national efforts to address antimicrobial resistance (AMR). CNISP has expanded significantly over the years and now conducts surveillance in 109 hospitals across 10 provinces and 1 territory.
